BIO

George Farrow-Hawkins (b. 1994) is a British visual artist whose practice is focused on using model-building and stop-motion to approximate the naturalism of otherwise mundane everyday scenes.

His films begin with the construction of miniature dioramas, often depicting environments that he knows intimately. Using repurposed and everyday materials, George alters and combines found objects until they echo the textures, surfaces and visual appearance of their full-scale counterparts.

George’s approach is informed by both visual and tactile observation. Rather than working from a fixed or systematic plan, he allows curiosity about his subject to guide the making process. Through painstakingly reconstructing familiar environments, he seeks to reinstate an awareness of spaces whose apparent permanence and functionality can cause them to become overlooked. There is a particular tension in his work between the artificiality of miniature model-making and the attempt to render the resulting scenes with a convincing naturalism.

George’s films have been selected for national and international film festivals, including the Edinburgh Short Film Festival, Suffolk Shorts Film Festival and Adriatic Film Festival in Italy.

George has also produced stop-motion music videos for musicians including Scottish Album of the Year nominees Constant Follower, creating visual accompaniments for their 2021 single What’s Left to Say and their 2023 collaboration with Scott William Urquhart, Waves Crash Here.
